Our inability to be present affects our internal balance, without which we are unable to experience peace of mind and joy.

Being constantly distracted also affects our ability to pay due attention to the people we are with, and prevents you from fully and freely expressing who you are.

Being present – being in the moment – provides you with an immense advantage when it comes to connecting and relating to people, and we will do well not to squander that opportunity.

Forget about How Much Money You’ve Got
The worth and dignity of a person transcends beyond the the amount of money they have in their wallet.

Yet, there are people in the world who appear to measure the worth of a person by the amount of money they have.

If you’ve seen this social experiment, you’d probably agree on who the dirt bags are – and there’s a fair chance they’re not very likeable with the average person either.

The irony of the matter is that to those who judge others based on how much money they have, they too will be judged by others (and themselves even) when they come across a richer person like them.

Truly likable people do not measure the worth of a person based on money – they relate to the common man or woman and see money as a tool to get things done.

Bullying is still rife in schools. Here's how teachers can tackle it

Many people will know what it feels like to be bullied. Despite a wealth of research and well-meaning interventions at a local level, bullying is still a common problem in UK schools (pdf) – and associated with depression, anxiety and even suicide.

Schools are legally obliged to tackle bullying, but they may not have had the adequate guidance or training to do so, meaning that attempts to address it often focus on the more obvious forms of bullying, such as physical aggression, and overlook the children’s views Dream beauty pro.

I have researched bullying for more than 10 years and implemented interventions in schools since 2014. My most recent intervention included 13 schools over a period of five months, and found that the most effective approaches enable children to play a leading role in resolving bullying.

We can get more students involved in advocating for an anti-bullying culture – here are some ways to get started.

Improve your understanding of bullying
Any school trying to tackle bullying needs to look beyond the “bully” and “victim” labels. Instead, it’s helpful to consider bullying as a spectrum of negative interactions that range from mild to severe, such as name-calling and hitting. Ask the children in your school about their experiences of bullying, why children might bully others, and how they think bullying should be addressed Dream beauty pro.

Bullying often happens because of a desire to be popular and to relieve boredom (pdf). To address this, help students find alternative ways to improve their status – by, for example, including ostracised pupils in activities and encouraging their peers to help.

Offer mentoring to ‘bullies’
Offer mentoring to those students who are persistently in trouble for bullying, to help them understand why they engage in this behaviour and resolve the underlying issues. Talking with students about what happened, the likely consequences of their actions, how they could respond more respectfully next time and role-playing alternative scenarios can all help break the pattern of negative behaviour.

Schools could provide regular sessions to resolve bullying proactively, rather than reacting to specific incidents after the fact. One pupil we worked with said afterwards: “I’ve quit all the fights and naughty things I’ve done.” Meanwhile, one headteacher we worked with told us there were no more reports of bullying at their school after they provided this type of mentoring.

Encourage pupils to help find solutions

Consult with children who engage in bullying and those who have been victimised to learn about their experiences – and seek recommendations of how bullying should be resolved.

Most children in my research experienced cyberbullying through gaming, but were primarily concerned with face-to-face bullying, which they felt was harder to avoid and ignore. In consulting with students, encourage them to talk about how they feel and reflect on how they can react to hurtful interactions more productively, rather than becoming extremely angry or upset. One pupil we worked with told us how these conversations helped to make a difference. “I used to scream and shout,” they said. “But I’ve learned to be calm Dream beauty pro.”

All students in my most recent study were encouraged to write in diaries regularly to provide a positive outlet for their emotions. The impact was stark. Rather than report every incident to teachers, we saw pupils speaking respectfully to those who engage in bullying, and were able to reflect on the bully’s perspective. Some children commented that they learned how to resolve bullying in their school and their lives outside of school.

Bring students together
After we worked individually with children who were in conflict with one another, they were brought together in a meeting. This was particularly revealing in the case of two boys who were perceived as bullying each other. The popular boy was seen as engaging in bullying the most because his friends were aggressive to the boy who was ostracised. However, the other boy often responded violently.

In the meeting, the ostracised boy explained how he was taking medication to improve his behavioural problems. The popular boy asked: “What do you want from me?” to which he replied, “Your friends”. Consequently, the more popular boy included him in social activities such as football and encouraged his friends to speak to him – as a result, the fighting stopped.

Create respectful staff-student relationships
Teachers and students must work together to tackle bullying. Some of the children who participated in our study said they felt sorry for a child who was forced to sit at the front of his class by his teacher – a number of them even offered to sit next to him and support him. Many teachers have said they’ve been surprised by children’s efforts to understand other pupils and stop bullying.

Strategies of how to resolve bullying between pupils and educators are being written into anti-bullying policies, although more research is needed to investigate bullying between pupils and teachers so that interventions can effectively identify and resolve the problem,Reckoned as one of the top design universities with diversity of programmes, polyu fashion and textile, as well as applied science programme, which is committed to be a hub for innovative design education in Hong Kong.

Teachers should consistently speak to children respectfully, listen to children, respond to their views and take time to understand their perspectives. Pupils are then more likely to then do the same with their peers.

Ding Jian, the executive director of Jade Vineyard, said what she endeavors to do is to produce a wine that represents the "taste of China", and that's why she moved from being an imported wine supplier to being the owner of a Chinese vineyard in 2013.

"Wine is the juice of land. I have sipped the juice of Saint Emillion (France), Tuscany (Italy) and Adelaide (Australia), and I wondered, what the taste of China was like," said Ding.

With its "one mountain, one terroir, one taste" motto, the vineyard aims,GuangDong Hotel provides useful tourism information for our honourable guests. Such as hong kong weather, currency exchange rate, tax, emergency number, electrical system and normal business hours.

media moguls who tend to dictate

The New York Times Best-Seller list is the primary resource for ideas about what to read next, with Oprah’s Book Club coming in at a close second… and though they’re both decent resources when it comes to finding something new to delve into, their recommendations tend to be based on how many people have read a book, rather than the quality of the story itself.

 

If you’re an avid reader, but want to shy away from the overly-lauded pieces that everyone else on the planet has inhaled, consider some of the titles listed below. They’re some of the best books of 2012, and though they haven’t received quite as much media attention as those on the NYT list, they are most certainly worth looking into. No pun intended, I swear.

 

Fiction

 

The Unlikely Pilgrimage of Harold Fry: A Novel, by Rachel Joyce

 

Every so often, we come across an antihero who is so awkwardly endearing that we just want to scoop him out of the book and invite him in for tea. Harold Fry is such a character, and this tale about his impromptu journey across England is both surreal enough to be believable, and genuine enough that the reader can relate to it. Fry is amazingly human, and his adventure takes us on a life-changing journey through the labyrinths of our own hearts.

 

Non-Fiction

 

Quiet: The Power of Introverts in a World That Can’t Stop Talking, by Susan Cain

 

If you or a close friend of yours would be described as an introvert, you might have more than a passing interest in this book. Often made fun of for being “too shy” or “too quiet”, introverts tend to pull away from the spotlight and prefer solitude over hyper-socializing, which is anathema to most modern societal expectations. This book is a fascinating study regarding the power and potential of introverts VS the extroverts that seem to be so idealized by American culture. There are tips on how to negotiate introvert/extrovert relationships, and fabulous, encouraging success stories about famous introverts who have changed the world.

The Pattern Scars, by Caitlin Sweet

 

Winner of the Canadian Bookie award for best Science Fiction, Fantasy or Speculative Fiction, this novel follows the story of a young woman named Nola, who was born into abject poverty, but managed to escape it with the help of those who recognized (and later, manipulated) her gift of prophecy. This isn’t a “unicorns and pixie dust” sort of fantasy book: it draws the reader through seedy interactions with brothel workers, psychopaths, and murderers, and intersperses blood magic and murder with devastating betrayals. The novel is dark and luminous at turns, and you never know if the next page will bring unimaginable heartbreak and terror, or dream-inspiring beauty.

Freakangels Box Set by Warren Ellis

 

The Freakangels web comic by the ever-brilliant (and oft-terrifying) Warren Ellis was published as a box set last month, and if you’re a fan of any of his work, this is a must-read. Written by Ellis and illustrated by Paul Duffield, the story revolves around twelve Londoners with startling psychic abilities: they accidentally flooded the world when they used their powers in unison a few years ago, and are now struggling to survive in the ruins of Whitechapel as something ominous creeps ever-closer…

Carla Hall's Pumpkin Spoon Bread Recipe

INGREDIENTS

For the roasted pumpkin:

1-2-pound pie pumpkin

Vegetable oil

For the spoon bread:

1 cup buttermilk

1 cup milk

1/2 cup (1 stick) unsalted butter

1 1/2 teaspoons kosher salt

1/2 teaspoon sugar

1 cup yellow cornmeal

1 cup roasted pumpkin, roughly mashed

3 large eggs, separated

1/4 cup fresh parsley, finely chopped

1 teaspoon dried sage

1/4 teaspoon chipotle powder

DIRECTIONS

To make the roasted pumpkin: Preheat oven to 450°F. Take a 1- or 2-pound pie pumpkin, cut in half (from top to bottom), and scoop out the seeds. Lightly rub the flesh with vegetable oil and place, flesh side down, on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper. Roast until tender, about 30 minutes. Allow to cool, then scoop out the flesh. You’ll have more than enough pumpkin; the rest can be refrigerated for up to one week and frozen for up to six months.

To make spoon bread: Reduce oven temperature to 350°F.

Put both kinds of milk, butter, salt, and sugar into a medium saucepan and bring to a simmer, then reduce heat and slowly whisk in the cornmeal. Stir continuously over low heat until thickened, about 1 or 2 minutes, then remove from heat and mix in the pumpkin. Set aside.

In a large bowl, whisk together the egg yolks with the parsley, sage, and chipotle. Beat the egg whites with an electric mixer in another bowl until soft peaks form. Whisk the cornmeal mixture into the the egg yolk mixture, then gently fold in the egg whites, incorporating through the center and then around the sides. If it’s well blended, you shouldn’t see any bits of egg white,An oil vaporizer runs on oil vape battery which needs charging. Now imagine one that takes long hour to pre-heat! Isn\'t that irritating? So, it\'s always better to buy an oil vape pen battery from reputed online sites.

Carefully pour the batter into a lightly oiled loaf pan (you can also use a casserole dish or even make individual portions in a muffin pan). Bake on the middle shelf until the sides are just pulling away from the sides of the pan and the center is set but still just barely wobbly in the center, about 40 minutes or so. Let cool for a few minutes before serving.

Using Natural Clays to Improve Your Skin

I’m sure you’ve done it or at least been tempted to do it.

 

What am I talking about? A facial, of course! It’s so hard to resist them. They promise you an hour to relax while someone works magic on your skin. They make all sorts of promises: youthful skin, no wrinkles, acne free, etc.

 

If you’ve given in, though, you probably already know that they aren’t worth it. There’s no question that facials are relaxing almo nature pet food. Some may even make you skin look better. But does it last? Is it work $100 or more? Probably not.

 

So what’s the alternative?

 

It just so happens that there is a natural and much more cost efficient way to improve your skin. Notice I didn’t say cheap. Why? Because cheap has a negative connotation—cheap usually makes people think low quality. Well, there’s nothing low quality about at home masks! There are, however, two main things to look out for when purchasing a quality clay mask...

 

1. A mask should be natural.

 

The whole purpose of a mask is to remove impurities and detox, right? We want to rid the skin of anything that might be “holding it back.” So why smear on chemicals? The only way to purchase a natural mask, though, is in its dry form. If it has any sort of liquid or oil in it, it will need a preservative and there are no effective natural preservatives. So look for a dry mask that you add water to at home.

In addition to being natural and more pure, dry masks will also last longer. You get more bang for your buck!

 

2. A mask should be pure.

 

Look at the ingredients. If the mask says for example “French Green Clay, Bentonite Clay, etc.” chances are that it’s “diluted.” The main ingredient, the one doing the work, is going to be the French Green Clay. The bentonite clay is just filler in this case. So know your clays and which is best for your skin type so that you can spot when something has been added as filler seo company.

 

Another example, if you have oily skin and want a strong mask that’s going to really cut down oil then you probably don’t want something like milk powder added in (another common filler).

 

So what’s the best way to use a mask? Well we did say that we wanted to relax, right? So here’s a great way to treat your skin and relax!

 

1) Fill a bowl halfway and heat it. Obviously, use a microwave safe bowl, or pour hot water into any old bowl.

 

2) Carefully bring this bowl to your bathroom.

 

3) Take a clean towel and hold it over your head as you carefully lean over the bowl. You should create a small “tent” with your town. Now … breathe. Yes, breathe in and out very slowly and relax. This will help prepare your skin and your mind. You can do this for as long or as little as you like.

 

4) When you are ready to move on you’ll prepare your mask. First, wash your hands. Then, take a clean and dry (make sure it is dry) spoon and scoop out a little clay. You can pour this clay into your hand or into a cup, which ever you prefer. Then add up to two-parts water to one-part clay.

 

5) Mix your clay and water combination and let it sit for about a minute. Wash your face well while you wait and pat dry with your clean towel.

 

6) Next, smear the freshly created mask on your face (and neck if you’d like). Make sure to put a medium to thick layer—if it’s too thin it will dry too quickly. It may take a couple tries before you learn just how many spoonfuls of clay you’ll need to get it just right but you’ll get it!

 

7) Now here’s the hard part. Sit down and relax. You can close your eyes, read a book, listen to music, whatever it takes, just enjoy this couple of moments to yourself.

 

8) Once the mask has completely dried (about 5–10 minutes) wash off with soap and warm water.

 

9) Lastly, apply your favorite moisturizer (and DON’T skip this step!).

 

You’re all done! All that’s left to do is marvel and your beautiful skin!

 

Want to take it up a notch? Rather than breathing in plain water or adding plain water to your clay, you can add teas! Two great options are chamomile tea and green tea. You can use just about any tea or floral water, though!

The British love to walk, and we will head out in any weather. A sunlit summer stroll works up a healthy glow; striding out into a winter gale feels brave and elemental. And a steamy-breathed crunch through fresh snow is a delight that can only be improved by the prospect of a hot toddy and a roaring fire at its conclusion.

 

But all of these walks take place in daylight, which is to ignore a whole new world of pedestrian exploration: the night walk. This is where familiar landscapes can be explored anew, when city streets are deserted and quiet, when the country seems yours alone and seldom glimpsed wildlife emerges to startle and thrill.

 

Britain has a great tradition of literary nightwalkers. First Chaucer, in an age when darkness could be banished only by faltering, fallible candles; later the Elizabethans, then the flaming torch or cradled lantern passes to Wordsworth, De Quincey and Dickens.

 

Then to Prof Matthew Beaumont, author of the recently published Night Walking: A Nocturnal History of London; and now to two explorers from The Sunday Telegraph. We rambled through the dark in the country and in the town, and we recommend further routes in both for your delight. Candlelight bounces off the boots of the walker in front of me. I dodge a half-illuminated root. Thud. The walker behind me catches it and duly stumbles. No one makes a sound. 

 

Our band of night travellers wends its way through the woods, each step a trusting thrust into the darkness, which indiscriminately meets breaking bracken, shifting mud and stubborn stone. Boggy bends, usually daintily circumvented, are trampled straight through, sending the path vertical, up the sides of our boots. Out front Jake, a wiry white Jack Russell terrier, shoots off down the track, fading and then reappearing as he turns to wait for us. His nose guides him, but my eyes bore hopelessly into the invisible path before finally, giving it up as a lost cause, I instead look up. Giant black redwoods spear the blue of the moonlit sky. But down on the forest floor all is darkness.

Artificial snow creates unforgettable Christmas at Sichuan university

Many women may have long suspected it, just as many men have secretly hoped for it. But it's official: women's breasts, and particularly those of younger women, are getting bigger. "Our team has undertaken international research and found that British women are also now five centimetres taller and have hips four centimetres larger than they had in the 1950s, while, instead of being size 12, they're edging towards size 16. We'd expect that to be similar to here."

 

Editor of men's magazine FHM Guy Mosel says it's hard to ignore. "I certainly have noticed that women's bodies are now very different to how they were 10 years ago," he says. "Even women with skinny bodies seem to have over-developed breasts travel trade show, which isn't a shape that used to exist at all."

Fashionable Mom

You're a mom and you're still thinking about being 'fashionable'? That's the kind of response I got from someone I went shopping with. 2. WASHING TOO OFTEN

 

Unless you have very oily hair, you don’t need to wash your hair every day. Over-washing can dry your hair, making it brittle, so only wash when you have to. I wash every other day, but if you have long hair, you might even be able to go another day between washings, preserving the precious oils in your hair. Need a little boost between washings? Try a dry shampoo, like the color-specific ones by Bumble & Bumble.

 

3. SKIPPING CONDITIONER

 

When you do wash your hair, it’s important to use conditioner, every time. In fact, my stylist, who has curly hair that tends to frizz, uses a rinse-out and a leave-on conditioner, every time she shampoos. Skipping conditioner can make your hair dull , dry, and prone to tangles.

 

4. BRUSHING TOO MUCH

 

When my grandmother was young, she was taught to brush her hair 100 strokes before bed each night. Now we know this is way too much to brush! Over-brushing can make your hair static-y, and it can lead to split ends and breakage. Brush only when you have to, and make sure you’re using the right brush for your hair.

 

5. BRUSHING WHEN WET

 

More about brushing: never, ever use a brush on wet hair! Instead, use a wide-tooth comb, which won’t damage your hair like a brush can. Start at the bottom, and work your way up, while your hair is still wet, and don’t tug at tangles (more about this later)!

 

6. SKIPPING TRIMS

 

This is the hair mistake I am most guilty of – skipping trims. Even if you’re trying to grow out your hair, regular trims are important to keep your hair looking and feeling healthy. In fact, if you are trying to grow your hair, like me, regular trims can help keep your hair in shape, and add style, so you’re not frustrated with it, and tempted to cut it again. Visit your stylist for a trim at least every 8 weeks.

 

7. NOT GOING SEASONAL

 

The change of seasons may be pretty, but it can wreak havoc on your tresses, so be sure to use products that protect your hair all year round. For instance, in summer, you might need a shampoo to get rid of chlorine from swimming in the pool, or a product with SPF to protect your hair from the sun. In winter, you’ll want a rich conditioner to prevent fly-aways and static. You’ll also want to use a de-frizz product on humid days.

 

8. BEING TOO TOUGH WITH TANGLES

 

Remember when I mentioned how to handle wet hair? I said it’s important not to tug at tangles. That goes for dry hair, too, not just wet hair! If you have a bad tangle, don’t just pull at it, since this can cause breakage (and a headache!). Use a de-tangling spray, then gently work the tangle out. That’s better!

 

9. LIVING LA VITA LOCA

 

I’m not suggesting you become a goody-two-shoes just for the sake of your hair, but smoking, drinking too much, and skimping on sleep can really take a toll on your body, including your hair. If you do over-indulge, and your hair pays the price Stationery Supplies Hong Kong , splurge on a hot oil treatment or deep conditioner to mitigate the damage.

 

I freely admit I do make some of these hair care mistakes on occasion, as my stylist can confirm, but I’m trying to take better care of my hair! I’m especially guilty of skipping trims… but fess up! Taking Care of Your Skin in Winter Weather

If you live in a place where the mercury has dropped enough for  snow to start falling, chances are you’re also starting to deal with “winter skin” right about now: cheeks are getting rough and dry, lips are chapping… and depending on the severity of the weather outside, skin can even flake, crack, or erupt into hives or eczema. This just isn’t a season that’s kind to skin at all. Fortunately, there are ways to combat the damage caused by freezing winds, snow, and hail business bank account requirement, and a few of these handy techniques are listed below.

 

Change Your Moisturizer

The lightweight moisturizer you use in summertime isn’t going to cut it during the winter. To fend off cold damage to your skin in winter, opt for creams that have a heavier oil content, as the oils will create a protective layer on the skin’s surface. Creams rich in avocado or sweet almond oil are ideal for your face, but try to avoid using cocoa or shea butter on facial skin, as it can clog pores.  If you’re prone to breakouts, talk to an aesthetician or dermatologist who can recommend a cream that’s right for your skin type.

 

Don’t forget that the skin on your entire body needs special care at this time of year: though you’ll see and feel the damage cold weather can cause to hands and feet (roughness, cracking around knuckles and cuticles, etc.) you might not notice dry patches on your legs or arms until they start to itch or flake. This is where the cocoa and shea butters come in: a good body lotion will replenish the moisture in your limbs as well as your cheeks, leaving you soft and supple all over.

Sunscreen

If you spend a lot of time outside, don’t forget to wear sunscreen! Your skin can be subjected to just as much UV damage in wintertime as in summer, so don’t hesitate to put on a layer of SPF 15 before putting on your makeup Exchange partner.

 

Exfoliate

Gentle exfoliation once a week will help to remove dry, dead skin from your cheeks and forehead, but don’t go overboard with it! Your skin takes a lot of damage from the weather outside, and scouring it too much will actually increase wear and tear, and will do more harm than good.

 

For the rest of your body, a homemade exfoliant such as a salt or sugar scrub can do wonders to slough off dead skin cells and leave you soft and smooth all over.

 

Wear Lip Balm

The skin on your lips is the thinnest and most sensitive on your entire body, so be sure to take proper care of them by protecting them from cold damage—that means you too, guys. It’s not a lot of fun to kiss someone whose lips are flaking apart like a dry old phone book. Aim for unflavoured lip balms with a carnauba or beeswax base (stick to the former if you’re vegan), and apply it regularly. It’s best to avoid using petroleum jelly as a lip balm, though; you really don’t want an oil industry by-product on your face, do you? Besides, petroleum jelly isn’t absorbed by the skin: it just sits on top of it, and can clog up pores rather thoroughly. Skin can’t absorb any moisture if it’s congested with oil slurry gel.

 

Shorten Your Bath Time

Have you ever gotten out of a hot bath after soaking for a while and realised that you were desperately thirsty? It’s likely because immersing yourself in hot water for long periods of time can actually deplete your body of moisture. Soaking in a hot bath can be absolutely blissful in this weather, but either try to keep your wallowing time to a minimum, or don’t make the water too hot. Scalding showers can also suck a fair bit of moisture out of you, so try to keep them short as well.

 

Stay Hydrated

Even though drinking water doesn’t moisturize your skin directly, it keeps your cells in top working order, which reflects in every area of your life—skin cells included. Flushing toxins out of your body with plenty of fluids will often keep you from breaking out as well.

 

Taking just a couple of these precautions should make a significant difference in the health of your skin in winter largest hospitality and tourism school. Eating properly and getting regular sleep will improve your overall well-being—which will be reflected in the state of your skin—and wearing proper outerwear such as gloves and scarves when traipsing about in the snow will help protect your skin from nose to toes.

How to Evaluate Any Skincare Product

Ever since I wrote a post alarming readers not to accept the Environmental Working Group's recommendations at face value, I’ve received a slew of emails asking me how consumers can investigate skincare products on their own. This is an invaluable skill, and it’s easy to do. It doesn’t require a master’s or Ph.D. in biological science to know whether or not a new ingredient, delivery system, or other skin care technology is scientifically proven or potentially harmful Neo skin lab 呃錢.

 

1. Look at the Label

The first step is to identify the major ingredients in their product. On a label, ingredients are listed from the highest concentration to lowest concentration (although ingredients that make up less than 1 percent of the product may be listed in any order). Focus on the first five ingredients listed, which typically comprise about 80 percent of the product.  

 

2. Search Smart

Next, go to PubMed, Google Scholar, Scopus, or another major abstract and citation research database. Use search terms related to skin care, such as “ingredient name” “skin” “wrinkle depth,” or “ingredient name” “skin” "toxicity.” The more specific you are with your search terms, the better.  

 

3. Analyze Your Results

Abstracts (summaries of studies) are generally free for the public to access, and the full text of the published papers generally cost less than $50, though many are free to access if you are a member of a university or scientific organization.

 

Although scientists are not typically regarded as being sensationalist, it is important to keep in mind that scientists spend months or years applying for grants and writing papers that must sum up their experiments and results in ways that others want not only to read, but to fund—sometimes with millions of dollars. While great scientists are able to do this without audacious or exaggerated claims in the titles of their publications, not all scientists are great, and occasionally the truth gets stretched or sensationalized. Fully educated skin care consumers must be aware of this.

 

4. Know what to look for.

Look for the following in your skin care studies:

 

The researcher is not affiliated with the company of interest. This can be extremely difficult, particularly in the U.S., where skincare products are not regulated by the FDA. As a result, sometimes the only research available about a skin care product or ingredient is done by a company with a monetary interest in the results dermes.

 

The study was large. The larger the study, the more likely it is that the results are applicable to the population in general. Think of flipping a coin; the more times you flip it, the more likely you are to have gotten heads half the time and tails half the time. Many skincare studies have only five or ten participants, which is unfortunate. I give far less weight to these than to studies with thirty or more subjects.

 

The study was randomized. The study subjects should be randomly assigned to treatment or control groups, not “selected.” This prevents scientists from studying an anti-aging cream and putting twenty-year-olds in the “treatment” group and eighty-year-olds in the “control” group and saying the treatment group looked significantly younger after eight weeks.

 

The study was placebo-controlled. The placebo effect has been well-documented. However, in a placebo-controlled study, all of the patients (even in the control group) get something, so you can measure whether it was the treatment itself that was effective, and not just the perception of being treated.

 

The study was published in a peer-reviewed journal. While there surely are great studies conducted outside the realm of published scientific research, well-versed scientists tend to give more weight to the studies in the journals than studies in company brochures or press releases. The peer review process keeps science honest by subjecting researchers’ work to criticism from their peers. That’s why it’s hard to find “Nine out of ten women report softer skin” in the headline of a science research journal article as often as in product advertisements.

 

The study was done on humans, not animals or tissue samples. It can be difficult to obtain these studies, but they are the holy grail of dermatological science. The problem is that if it is believed a treatment may cause a detrimental condition, researchers would rather harm animals or tissue cultures than actual humans. It is more reasonable to look for human (in vivo) studies when you are looking for a potential benefit rather than harm. For instance, human studies have verified the benefits of niacinamide, retinoids, and sunscreen in fighting signs of aging over time.

 

The study tested ingredients at reasonable concentrations. One of the reasons the FDA allows parabens to be used in skincare is that the amount of parabens in products is extremely low compared with the amount of parabens tested in studies. Some of the studies that demonstrated that “parabens could cause cancer” exposed mice to 25,000 times the typical dose in a skincare product–even if some types of parabens remain in the system for three years, this is still over 1000 times the amount of parabens you would ever have in your system. Always keep dosage in mind.

 

The study’s results have been replicated. Here’s one of my favorite quotes: “If one person tells you that you’re a horse, he’s crazy. If three people tell you that you’re a horse, there’s a conspiracy afoot. If ten people tell you that you’re a horse, buy a saddle.” The same goes for dermatological science: When one study touted retinol for its anti-aging properties, it was a brilliant suggestion. When retinol’s smoothing and wrinkle-fighting abilities were verified by thousands of studies, it is considered to be a gold standard by many dermatologists. In other words, repeatability equals reliability water filter pitcher.
